Joonas Donskoi retires from pro hockey due to concussion issues

Joonas Donskoi, a former NHL right winger, announced his retirement from professional hockey on Sunday, citing multiple concussions as the reason. The 31-year-old played seven seasons in the NHL, most recently with the Seattle Kraken.

Donskoi revealed his decision on Instagram, saying that it was hard to let go of his lifelong passion, but that he had to prioritize his health and future. He thanked his family, friends, teammates, coaches and fans for their support throughout his career.

Donskoi's last NHL game was on May 1, 2022. He missed the entire 2022-23 season after suffering a concussion during the pre-season. He was in the final year of his four-year contract with the Kraken.

Donskoi said that he was proud of his achievements in the NHL, where he scored 104 goals and 141 assists in 462 games. He also said that he fulfilled his dream of playing in the league and reaching his potential.

Donskoi started his NHL career with the San Jose Sharks in 2015, after playing six seasons in Finland with Karpat. He joined the Colorado Avalanche in 2019 as a free agent, and then was selected by the Kraken in the 2021 expansion draft.
