D.J. Reed sets a lofty goal for the Jets' defense: 'I believe we can make history.'

The addition of Aaron Rodgers to New York has given the Jets one of the most intriguing seasons in franchise history, but last year's defensive performance is starting to show potential.

Cornerback D.J. Reed is confident that with the championship window open, this team will level up again, if not further.

"I'm very confident," he said, as ESPN's Rich Cimini reported, "I think we have the potential to be the best defensive team in the NFL. I honestly think we can make history, not just as the best defense in the league, but I think we can be the preeminent defense in the history of defenses, like the 1985-1986 Bears and the 2013 L.O.B. (Legion of Boom). I think we can be that kind of dominant as long as we can integrate everything."

Both teams are stalwarts in their respective teams' Super Bowl bid, and are often viewed as beacons of greatness to aim for, along with the likes of the 2000 Ravens.

While it remains to be seen if Gang Green will be able to deliver on that expectation, they are more than capable of doing so on all levels.

Rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner, the reigning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year opposite Reed, has plenty of room to grow, and C.J. Mosley, back in peak form at the interior defensive line position, was named to the All-Star second team last season for the first time since 2019. And Quinnen Williams earned the second-highest annual contract for an interior defensive lineman in NFL history, and deservedly so.

Players like John Franklin-Myers, who was third on the team with five tackles in 2022, complemented those star players, backing up Reid's proclamation.

"Why don't you state your goals?" Franklin Miles said." We're not afraid to declare that we want to win a Super Bowl or we want to be the best defensive team in the NFL."

Last year, the Jets ranked fourth in the NFL on defense after excelling in scoring and offensive yards. Limiting opposing offenses' scoring and forcing opponents to make mistakes will be imperative in the coming season if they want to advance to be the best team overall, let alone one of the best defenses in history.

Although New York has one of the fewest passing touchdowns in 2022, they rank in the middle of the pack in rushing defense yards, ranking just 16th. They also had one of the fewest opportunities in the NFL, forcing only 16 turnovers (29th in the conference).

"Turnovers are a key metric in evaluating the game of football." Franklin Miles said, "We understand that, and this will move us from No. 4 to No. 1."

For now, these are just some ambitious words as the offseason remains a challenge for the Jets. However, if New York is able to achieve a historic defensive feat, then players like Aaron Rodgers have enough to contribute to a potentially special season.

However, the first month of games will certainly test that optimism. Three of the Jets' first four opponents - the Bills, Cowboys and Chiefs - were among the top four scoring teams last year. Mosley agrees with Reid and Franklin Miles that the Jets are good enough to take on these high-level opponents, but he also understands the task at hand.

"When our brothers say that, now we have to go out there and prove ourselves," he said.
